A surface tracking fast algorithm for computing Lagrangian coherent structures in 3D unsteady flows

چکیده
A surface tracking algorithm is developed for the computation and extraction of Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) in 3D unsteady flows. An advancing front algorithm is used to approximate the LCS surface with a mesh of triangles at each time step. Computations are performed only along the ridges in the finite time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) field, which identify LCS. Initial results appear very promising and a fully optimized implementation of the algorithm is expected to provide large savings in computational time. Nomenclature

Fast Computation of FTLE Fields for Unsteady Flows: A Comparison of Methods
This paper presents new, efficient methods for computing finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) fields in unsteady flows. The methods approximate the particle flow map to eliminate redundant particle integrations in neighboring flow map calculations. Two classes of flow map approximations are investigated based on composition of intermediate flow maps; unidirectional approximation constructs a ti...
متن کاملDistinguished material surfaces and coherent structures in three-dimensional fluid flows
We prove analytic criteria for the existence of finite-time attracting and repelling material surfaces and lines in threedimensional unsteady flows. The longest lived such structures define coherent structures in a Lagrangian sense. Our existence criteria involve the invariants of the velocity gradient tensor along fluid trajectories. An alternative approach to coherent structures is shown to l...
متن کاملAn Experimental Testbed for Multi-robot Tracking of Manifolds and Coherent Structures in Flows
In this paper, we describe the development of an experimental testbed capable of producing controllable ocean-like flows in a laboratory setting. The objective is to develop a testbed to evaluate multi-robot strategies for tracking manifolds and Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) in the ocean. Recent theoretical results have shown that LCS coincide with minimum energy and minimum time optimal...
متن کاملTracking Attracting Lagrangian Coherent Structures in Flows
This paper presents a collaborative control strategy designed to enable a team of robots to track attracting Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) and unstable manifolds in two-dimensional flows. Tracking LCS in dynamical systems is important for many applications such as planning energy optimal paths in the ocean and predicting various physical and biological processes in the ocean. Similar to ...
متن کاملTime Line Cell Tracking for the Approximation of Lagrangian Coherent Structures with Subgrid Accuracy
Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) have become a widespread and powerful method to describe dynamic motion patterns in time-dependent flow fields. The standard way to extract LCS is to compute height ridges in the finite-time Lyapunov exponent field. In this work, we present an alternative method to approximate Lagrangian features for 2D unsteady flow fields that achieve subgrid accuracy wit...
